Strings Breaking In the Same Place - Deburring

Occasionally, strings will break at the same spot over and over again. A rough spot or burr may have formed on metal parts eventually cutting the string. A burr maybe too small to see or feel. This can happen at the metal eyelet on the soundboard, the bridge pin or the tuning pin. To deburr these parts do the following:

An example of a burr on a pin. At the Bridge Pin - If the bridge pin is the suspected culprit, obtain some 400 grit sandpaper (do not use a larger size as a coarser grit may actually cause burrs) and fold it so that it has a rounded edge. Make several passes with the sand paper in the groove of the bridge pin where the string would contact the bridge. This will knock off any burrs.

At the Eyelet or Tuning Pin - Obtain some abrasive cord at the hardwear store. Abrasive cord is a string that has sandpaper type grit attached to it. Try to get a fine grit (200-400). The larger the number the finer the grit. Run the abrasive cord through the hole of the eyelet or tuning pin in a flossing type manner. This will remove any burrs.

If you are repeatedly breaking strings when you are first putting them on or immediately after installing them, see Changing A String for some detailed stringing assistance.
